Dr. Shomit Mitter has been tutoring our daughter for
11+ and I can testify as to his brilliance as a teacher. In just ten weeks, he has helped her raise her grades spectacularly. She
has gone from scoring an average of 60% to regularly getting over 80% (and,
amazingly, often over 90%) in timed English and Maths 11+ examination papers
given to her at her private north London school.
During this demanding period, our daughter has flourished, growing hugely
not just in ability but also in confidence. Dr. Mitter is inspirational, motivating, hugely competent and highly intelligent.
He is also, as a former Cambridge University tutor, very experienced and
highly qualified.
Over the years, as a journalist, I have written about a broad range of subjects,
including education, for a variety of national newspapers. I have reported
on numerous schools and teachers. In this context, Dr. Mitter stands out
as an extraordinary and charismatic educator, capable of getting the children
entrusted in his care not just to excel but also fostering in them a love
of learning.
Before we took him on as a tutor, I spoke to a number of parents of his
erstwhile and current pupils. They were universal in their praise - and
their children had all attained excellent results, gaining places at schools
from St Paul's and Westminster to Godolphin & Latymer. Should you require anything further, I would be willing to answer additional
questions in confidence.

Shomit was an instant hit with
my 9 year old, Ted. He tantalized him with his subversive habit of
practicing cricket indoors, with irreverent promises of Nutella on toast
and unorthodox TV treats. With so little time to go before the exam,
my high-minded antipathy to bribery was out of the window. Frankly,
anything that would motivate my son to acquire some writing and analysis
skills would be tolerated.
With only 2 meagre weeks to bring him up to a level that would get him through
an exam, Shomit used an inspiring quickfire method to engage Ted –
he quickly found his strong points and built on them with clever strategies
for story-writing: having discussed at length the simple 5-part story
structure, he miraculously produced an A4 cribbing sheet for Ted to use
at home to structure his own story. So clever is Shomit’s way
that Ted thought he’d conducted a conjuring trick to produce such
an immediate facsimile of their conversation.
Shomit is utterly positive and inspiring – not a negative sign or
word. He has the highest regard for children and is excited by their
potential. Even if a piece of work isn’t up to the mark, he
roots out the excellence, all the while reinforcing the required skills.
He sleight of hand has a winning way with parents too – easily communicating
what needs to be done, handing over reassuring printed guides – intelligent
‘how to’s, summarizing the subject, with ideas and structures
to follow at home. He has a passion for learning and communicates
his high expectations with a real sense of excitement so that both children
and parent are drawn in and ready to go.

I think Dr. Shomit is a very nice and funny teacher and
I would recommend him to anyone. I can explain. I am sitting an exam
on Monday and I was struggling in my English. So, I went to see Dr.
Shomit and now I feel like I’m ahead of the game. And that is
all because of Dr. Shomit.

Shomit has been a very helpful tutor and has taught
me many techniques which have helped me in school. He always tries
to make sure that I understand something before moving on to something new.
He is very kind and always has a laugh in class. He always makes me
feel happy about my work. He is a very helpful and good teacher.

Where do I start? Seriously, Shomit helped me so much, psychologically and with my English and Maths abilities. He made me feel good about myself and mywork. He made me study really hard to get a sense of achievement. Once I started with him, I've never been so hard-working in my life!
Then I was ill for 11+ and did my exams with a temperature. I was devastated when I didn't get into Latymer. When the rest of the results came, it was hard to make up my mind. I chose South Hampstead High School. I'm now having the time of my life there! To be honest, I never had a chance to say thank you to Dr. Shomit Mitter so.....here it is :)

I know Dr. Shomit Mitter personally. He has a deep love and knowledge of
people, particularly children. He has been teaching for many years- since
he was in college, in fact! I know he is a born teacher and teaches
with kindness, compassion, a sense of humour and intuition. It was for
this reason, along with the fact that he knows children's literature so
well, that I asked him to help my class of eleven- year- olds with some
book reviews they were writing. He dealt with each individually, taking
immense trouble analyzing and evaluating them. In his busy schedule he
takes time to reply to the children's letters and gives them interesting
and valuable answers.
It was a great privilege to work with Dr. Mitter and have him critique
the children's work. I hope he will continue to interact with the children
in my school.

Shomit Mitter is an excellent tutor. He has a positive gentle approach and gives inspiring lessons bringing out the child’s creativity (however hidden!) He gives constructive feedback to the child as well as the parents and his training in hypnosis allows him to hand skills on to the anxious chld in preparing for scary exams! All in all, he is a lovely man and always positive and kind.
